Reviews:
"...a valuable, easy-to-use resource for high school or larger public libraries." - KLIATT

About This Database:
Facts On File’s literature database has been thoroughly revised and expanded to include the writings of renowned literary critic Harold Bloom. In addition to Facts On File’s extensive print literature collection, the database now includes Bloom’s essays and criticism that examine the lives and works of great writers throughout history and the world. Unlike many resources, this database contains an archive of more than 38,000 characters, as well as extensive entries on literary topics, themes, movements, and genres. Other features new to Bloom’s Literary Reference Online include the addition of new Facts On File titles, redesigned browse and keyword search options, a timeline of world literature, and a special feature on Harold Bloom’s Western Literary Canon. Diverse and authoritative, this database is sure to become a standard resource for all school and public libraries.

Easy-to-use Browse and Search Functions
Handy browse and search features lead readers quickly and easily through the database, providing in-text links and numerous options for further research. Users can now search across the entire database.

In addition to searching, users can also browse each content category for more specific results—by time period within American, British, or world literature; by author type, including Novelists, Poets, and Short Story Writers; by literary genre, including Drama, Essays and Speeches, and Science Fiction; by nationality for all authors; and by an A-to-Z list. Author biographies link users to a list of major works, and works are linked to a list of principal characters.

Features include:
  • Authors: biographies of thousands of authors from around the world, browsable by nationality, type of writing, or time periods ranging from ancient to modern
  • Works: overviews, synopses, analyses, and literary criticism on thousands of works—from poetry to plays—browsable by genre and time period or alphabetically
  • Topics and Themes: in-depth articles on literary movements, literary groups, magazines and newspapers, and historical events that help place literature in context, as well as definitions of literary terms
  • Timeline: entries on births, deaths, publications, and events in world literature from the ancient era to modern day
  • Characters: information on more than 38,000 major and minor literary characters, including where they first appeared, what part they played in the plot, and how they are related to other literary characters
  • Harold Bloom's Western Literary Canon: Professor Bloom's selections of the major works of Western literature through the modern era.
