Global Cities - 6 New Titles for 2007!
The
term "global city," coined by American sociologist and economist Saskia
Sassen in 1991, refers to international cities that impact the rest of
the world politically, culturally, and/or socioeconomically. The new Global Cities series
directs students' attention to established world cities and newly
emerging metropolises. Each book offers an overview of the city's
history and explains why its location is significant. Contemporary
problems - pollution, crime, lack of services, etc. - are pinpointed.
Culture, economy, tourism, wildlife, transportation, and management are
also explored. Photographs especially commissioned for the series
provide fresh visual insight, and interviews with locals put a human
face on the experience of those residing in each city. Full-colour
maps, charts, statistics, and a view toward the future add depth to
this timely new series.
