Though they had served their country since the Civil War, African Americans were ignored as potential pilots as late as the start of World War II. Thanks to the efforts of, among others, President Truman and the African American pilots who would not be denied, the Tuskegee Institute of Alabama began training African Americans to serve as pilots in the Second World War.
