Fifth edition of an anthology of English language poetry, first published in 1987. Fourth edition appeared in 1987. Poems range from the thirteenth century until the present day, and are grouped by poet, starting with the most recent writers, through to early poets such as Chaucer. Includes brief biographical notes and explanatory footnotes. Several Australian poets are represented. This edition includes 59 additional poems and 12 new poets. Also new is a comparisons index that provides a guide to poems relating to major themes, such as Love and War. Also includes a discussion of rhythm, form and metre, and indexes of first lines and titles, and poets. Editor taught literature at Monash University and James Cook University from 1983 to 1996. He also edited 'Australian Verse: An Oxford Anthology' and 'New Music: Contemporary Australian Poetry'.
